Family friend sentenced to 1 yr in jail for DUI in Fairfax, VA.?

Is there any way to get a sentence reduction? If so, can anyone recommend an Attorney? He plead to Felony Dui (3rd in 10 years – he’s 29, his first was at age 19 when any alcohol on your breath is a DUI) which was not really a plea – it was simply the charge. His attorney was “confident” he would get 90 days. ( I don’t think diligence was on our side)

Please, I know a DWI is a horrible offense and I don’t want any sarcastic answers. He did a bad thing. He endangered himself and others. It was reckless and stupid and a bad life pattern…

They did take his license for 10 years. His family has had a lot of hardship – his mom’s a recovering heroin addict, his sister committed suicide as a teenager…. He’s a good guy, with an alcohol problem. They sentenced him to jail, not treatment.

Any recommendations? Lawyers? Anything you can say on the topic that can help will be appreciated, even if its a similar experience.

Unfortunately, he has had three DUI’s, if he was in California he would have been sentenced to a mandatory 18 months in prison, not just jail. Just because his license is gone does not mean he won’t drive, he will and he’ll think he won’t get caught. Hopefully while he is in he will seek help via AA or NA meetings and continue it once he gets out. My past experience has been that people go right back to doing exactly what they went in for as soon as they get out. Next time may be the time someone gets killed. I truly hope not, but you need to be supportive while he’s in and hopefully he’ll come out a better person for it.
